My name is Amy Karewa and I served at the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona from August 2013-2014. I was tasked with raising funds for the BackPack Program at the food bank, which sends home bags of nutritious food with low-income children, through creating a fundraising model which built on the current program structure. My service taught me the importance of nonprofits, particularly those that fill a very concrete need in the community. After Arizona Serve, I served as a VISTA again in Boston, MA at the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange, raising awareness in the community through visual projects and raising funds for the agency through grants and annual appeals. My VISTA experience has led me down a career path in nonprofit development (Next week, I will start a position as Corporate & Foundation Relations Manager with a Boston nonprofit), which I otherwise wouldn't have considered. Through my years of service, I have gained more empathy for the plight of those most at risk in our communities, as well as the professional experience I need to excel in my chosen line of work.
