MLK Day January 21st, 2013 -  A Day On, Not A Day Off

Over the past six years, Serve Yavapai and the Yavapai County AmeriCorps Project have honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by turning out hundreds of residents throughout Yavapai County to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service a “Day on, not a day off.”  Volunteers in Yavapai County will join hundreds of thousands of Americans who are participating in MLK Day of Service projects in all fifty states as our country continues to honor the legacy of Dr. King by volunteering on this national holiday. On January 21st, 2013 local citizens will come together to address community needs and opportunities for today, tomorrow, and beyond.

With a focus on education, literacy and employment for all people in Arizona, volunteers can participate in meaningful work to help each other grow and connect with a sense of unity and compassion for each other’s efforts. There is no more fitting way to honor Dr. King’s memory than by serving others, particularly those most in need. As Dr. King himself said, “Life’s most urgent and persistent question is: ‘what are you doing for others?’”

Please be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and bring a lunch.  All ages and abilities welcome!

For this MLK Day 2013, Serve Yavapai will host service projects that will go on to support the local schools in Prescott Unified School District and Humboldt Unified School District. Service projects will also go on to support our veterans, active military and military families. A centralized kickoff celebration will be held at 10:00am the morning of MLK Day with a keynote address to rally participants around the life and legacy of Dr. King at Trinity Presbyterian Church. We are hosting this day of activities in hopes of inspiring volunteerism throughout the year and helping communities county-wide improve their access to services that provide basic needs; support out local schools, and honor the accomplishments of our veterans and service men and women.
