My name is Kyla Muñoz and I served as an AmeriCorps VISTA with Our Family Services from 2016-2017. Joining Arizona Serve was the perfect way to build professional skills after college, gain real-life experience working for a nonprofit, and connect with other people with similar interests.

I spent my project working on marketing and outreach for my organization. From developing new social media content to translating materials to Spanish, my work helped me develop my communication and digital skills while serving a community I cared about. I looked to Arizona Serve often for resources to guide my project. My VISTA Leader was a great mentor in helping me develop my marketing plan and implementing it both online and out in the community.

Since finishing my year with Arizona Serve, I have been working in Cusco, Peru for a nonprofit called GirlSportWorks, teaching sports and life skills to girls as well as operating our social media and communication platforms. This fall, I will begin earning a Master of Public Health degree at the Colorado School of Public Health. My AmeriCorps VISTA experience was exactly what I needed to develop my skill set to take on this new position abroad and earn a spot in my desired graduate program.
