As I began my AmeriCorps service-term, I had a roundabout idea of the personal gains I’d walk away with…probably what’d you’d expect. I’d fulfill a desire to give back to the community, make a positive impact on society, meet like-minded individuals…and get some much needed help paying off student loans! But what I didn’t realize was how much I’d develop as a public speaker, a leader, an innovator, a facilitator, a team member, a trainer, a mentor, and ultimately a professional.

I served over the course of two years as both an AmeriCorps VISTA and AmeriCorps State member, working with the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona’s Financial Stability department to design and implement programs that would help individuals and families achieve financial independence. Never in my life had I taken on such an audacious goal, but with the help from my team at the United Way and the training and backing of Arizona Serve, I had all the confidence in the world that the goal was achievable. I was right. Through Arizona Serve’s bi-weekly training, paired with the on-the-job training I was receiving at the United Way, I was well-equipped to make an impact. Through my service I became an IRS certified tax preparer, a financial coach, I received a Certificate in Civic Leadership, I helped launch an educational app, the list really could go on and on. These experiences challenged me in ways I couldn’t imagine, but also pushed me to tap into my true potential.

Choosing to serve in AmeriCorps is a major commitment, you’ll be placed in scenario’s that have real world implications, people will depend on the work that you perform…directly or indirectly. Accepting this responsibility and rising to the occasion, shaped me personally and professionally. AmeriCrops taught me that there’s not always a cookie-cutter solution to every problem, but through critical-thinking a solution can be found. The problem-solving skills and resiliency I developed through AmeriCorps have trickled into many aspects of my life. After serving in AmeriCorps I completed my master’s degree in accounting and was fortunate enough to have multiple job offers upon graduation. None of which would be possible without the growth I experienced while serving as an AmeriCorps member.
